About this opportunity

We are looking for a driven power systems engineer to support Middleton Group’s grid connection application projects. The power systems engineer will be focusing on power systems modeling studies and analysis for new solar farms, wind farms, BESS, and hybrid generator connections throughout Australia, using tools such as PSS®E, PSCAD, and DIgSILENT PowerFactory.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work closely with project engineers and team leaders
  • General electrical engineering design tasks such as cable sizing
  • Perform static and dynamic simulations using tools such as PSS®E, PSCAD and DIgSILENT PowerFactory
  • Review static and dynamic simulation results and compare them to performance criteria
  • Use and contribute to python automation repositories
  • Prepare connection application project documentation and reports such as Releasable User Guides (RUGs) and Generator Performance Standards (GPS) reports

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Hold a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in relevant field
  • At least 2 years of experience
  • Experience using PSS®E, PSCAD or DIgSILENT PowerFactory, preferably as part of grid connection studies 
  • Experience using Python, preferably interfacing with PSS®E, PSCAD or DIgSILENT PowerFactory 
  • Basic familiarity with sections of the NER relating to grid connection applications (e.g. Chapter 5, S5.2) 
  • Basic familiarity with AEMO’s modelling requirements 
  • Basic familiarity with AEMO and Network Service Provider grid connection processes 
  • Basic familiarity with general electrical engineering design principles such as control, protection and equipment sizing 
  • Problem solving skills and analytical thinking 
  • Strong oral communication skills 
  • Strong written communication skills and experience preparing user documentation and reports for external stakeholders 

The following skills/experience will be highly valued:

  • Experience using software development tools such as Git (or similar) 
  • Experience developing Graphical User Interfaces for software applications 
  • Basic understanding of web development (HTML, JavaScript, CSS) 
  • Experience working with databases and SQL (or similar) 
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services 
  • Experience writing PSS®E user models
