Overview
As part of the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) program to eliminate Melbourne’s most dangerous and congested level crossings, a 2x4MW Southern Cross substation was created to upgrade the traction power system, a task identified through modeling as necessary to support the future deployment of High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMT) on the Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) network.
Challenge
The tasks included developing a multi-story substation equipment layout design and optimisation, creating a 11 kV AC, 1500 V DC, low voltage AC and DC, communication and control cable reticulation design to support a 1500 V DC feeder interface design, and additionally, ensuring a negative return current system/track interface design.
Solution
Middleton Group played a key role in the design management, electrical and structural detailed design vendor interfacing and construction phase. It was necessary to develop architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, power, overhead wiring and earthing deliverables to a detailed design standard required to clearly articulate the project and design intent.
Results
The team’s expansive knowledge in design management and electrical design allowed for all options to be evaluated and the most beneficial chosen.
